Canada goldenrod grows well in sunny habitats in a variety of dry to slightly moist soil types. It does well even if the soil is somewhat compacted such as on former crop land. It spreads by tough, shallow rhizomes that can penetrate dense sod. The larvae of goldenrod gall flies stimulate the distinctive, ball-shaped stem galls.
